Grandpa Bird: A Journey to the Sky
Helping your child to cope with grief after losing a loved one
Dear parents, I wrote this book in a time of grief, a day after I lost my father, and an hour after I understood that I should stop thinking about my loss and start thinking about my kids’ loss and all the kids of my extend family.
Talking to young children about death is one of the most difficult parts of parenting. When a beloved one passes away, a child’s world can instantly feel confusing. Children aged 3 to 7 process grief differently than adults; they often misunderstand the permanence of loss, experience rapid shifts in emotion, and require steady reassurance to feel safe.
Grandpa Bird provides a gentle, reassuring bridge for these tough conversations. Through a comforting narrative, this book serves as a tool to help your child navigate the complex emotional landscape of losing a loved one and, at the same time, understand the importance of adopting good habits for their own life.
How This Book Helps Your Child:
Validates Big Emotions: The story follows the natural stages of grief—from confusion and sadness to anger and eventual acceptance—showing children that whatever they feel is completely okay.
Offers a Soothing Metaphor: By framing Grandpa’s transition with peaceful imagery, the book gives young minds a concrete, comforting concept to hold onto without feeling frightened.
Encourages Open Dialogue: Each page acts as a safe space and a conversation starter, allowing your child to ask questions and share fears at their own pace.
Emphasises Lasting Love: The core message reminds children that while Grandpa is no longer physically here, his love and memories live on in their hearts forever.
Tips for Reading Together
Create a Secure Environment: Choose a quiet, unhurried time to read. Hold your child close so they feel physically safe and comforted.
Let Them Guide the Pace: It is normal if your child wants to pause, repeat pages, or ask questions. Follow their lead and let them process at their own speed.
Be Honest and Patient: Use simple, clear language. It is also healthy to show your own grief—seeing you express sadness teaches them that crying is a natural part of missing someone.
Last, my hope is that Grandpa Bird would bring your family comfort, foster deep healing, and remind your little ones that they are surrounded by love as they navigate this journey.
Losing a loved one is never the end of a journey, but the beginning of a new one for all.
Yours with love and sympathy,
Jon
