What is the best definition of Active Word-Of-Mouth Indicator (AWOMI)?

By Jon Ane

Word-Of-Mouth promotion is the most effective promotion of your product that comes right from other people’s mouths. Of course, it does not stand alone.

The active Word-Of-Mouth Promotion Indicator (AWOMI) points to the actual motivation of your customers to recommend your brands to others actively. We use a scale of 1-100. We survey two populations:

  1. Percentage of Active veteran customers who are willing to recommend the product to others. For instance, 80%.
  2. Percentage of New customers per period who pointed to Word-Of-Mouth as one of the main promotion tools that caused them to choose the product. For instance, 60%.

Formula: AWOMI = 80 x 0.6 = 48 points.

The figure can be used as an absolute figure or a relative one.

Another indicator is the Net Promoter Score NPS.
